- PS, Polystyrene is a synthetic aromatic hydrocarbon polymer made from the monomer styrene. Polystyrene can be solid or foamed.
- General purpose polystyrene is clear, hard, and rather brittle. It is a rather poor barrier to oxygen and water vapour and has arelatively low melting point. Polystyrene is one of the most widely used plastics, it can be naturally transparent, but can be coloured with colourants. Uses include protective packaging, containers, lids, bottles, trays, tumblers, disposable cutlery, and in the making of models.
Characteristics:
- Excellent dimensional stability to heat
- High rigidity, hardness
- Good mechanical characteristics
- Extraordinary dielectric values
- Low volatile substance content
- Termite and micro-organism resistant
- Low water absorption tendency
- Suitable for use with food
Typical Properties of PS:
Optical, electronic, electrical, and medical applications, dining utensils, plastic cups, housewares, toys, CD cases, cosmetic containers, covers and fixtures, disposable drinking cups, egg cartons, trays, fast-food containers, cushioned packaging, and thermal insulation for the construction market.
